This is a really detailed tutorial, thanks for putting it together!

The Excalidraw SVGs were exported with "Embed Scene" enabled so you can open/edit those SVG files directly.
I doubt anyone would do this, but it looks like compressing the Excalidraw SVGs could cause them to lose the embedded data that lets you open them in Excalidraw.
