Thank you for opening a Pull Request! Before submitting your PR, there are a few things you can do to make sure it goes smoothly:

  • Make sure to open an issue as a bug/issue before writing your code! That way we can discuss the change, evaluate designs, and agree on the general idea
  • Ensure the tests and linter pass
  • Code coverage does not decrease (if any source code was changed)
  • Appropriate docs were updated (if necessary)

Summary of Changes

Hello @ohmayr, I'm Gemini Code Assist1! I'm currently reviewing this pull request and will post my feedback shortly. In the meantime, here's a summary to help you and other reviewers quickly get up to speed!

This pull request significantly enhances the performance of the rst utility function by implementing a caching mechanism for pypandoc conversions. It also introduces smart logic to identify and directly process plain text inputs, thereby avoiding expensive pypandoc calls when not strictly necessary. These changes aim to reduce processing overhead and improve the overall efficiency of RST rendering within the system.

Highlights

  • Performance Optimization: Introduced caching for pypandoc conversions using functools.lru_cache to reduce redundant processing.
  • Intelligent Text Handling: Added logic to detect plain text (e.g., snake_case strings) and bypass pypandoc conversion, directly wrapping the text instead for efficiency.
  • New Helper Function: Created _convert_pandoc to encapsulate the pypandoc call, making the caching mechanism cleaner and more modular.
  • Enhanced Test Coverage: Added a new unit test (test_rst_snake_case) to specifically verify the new plain text handling logic and ensure pypandoc is not called unnecessarily.

Code Review

This pull request introduces a performance improvement by caching the results of pandoc conversions using functools.lru_cache. It also refines the logic to intelligently bypass pandoc for simple text containing snake_case identifiers, which further enhances performance. The accompanying tests are updated to reflect these changes and ensure correctness. Overall, this is a solid improvement. I have one minor suggestion for code cleanup.

The explicit str() conversions for text and source_format are redundant. The rst function's signature already defines text as a str, and source_format has a default string value and is also typed as str. Removing these explicit conversions will make the code slightly cleaner.
