Unlike the title of this PR, please remember to give this a proper commit title -- one that doesn't say "backport" and one that, at a glance, could get a theme/gist. I've seen this mistake by Eric recently... so easy to hit the green buttons and the next thing you know, it's there forever.

However, I do think it is worth mentioning that it was a backport in the message because sometimes that implies merging which is a potential source of bugs.

Test failures are inconsistent and appear unrelated.
