There was some lengthy discussion, the details of which I don't remember, because I got sidetracked, about ulimits especially at RAL-LCG2 in the GridPP ops meeting today. LHCb was mentioned. Maybe you could send some hand hacked jobs to RAL-LCG2 for testing ?
