WPGraphQL Logging Skeleton Plugin

Overview

Based on POC branch - https://github.com/wpengine/hwptoolkit/tree/poc-wpgraphql-logging-monolog/plugins/wpgraphql-logging and the RFC - #152 develop a skeleton logging WPGraphQL plugin.

Outcomes

• Convert initial POC into a skeleton plugin
• Change PHP min version to PHP 8.1 so we can use Monolog version 3 and also use some new PHP features
• Setup unit tests, Psalm, PHPStan and PHP CS Fixer
• Create basic admin configuration for logging
• Create POC "WPGraphQL Request Lifecycle" with an event based subscriber system for extendability

Some considerations is that we make PHP min version 8.1 and also WPGraphQL 2.3.0.

Reasons for this is that the purpose of the plugin is to help debug performance bottlenecks for WPGraphQL. Some logicial steps would be to make sure your on the latest version of PHP (currently PHP. 8.4) and also WPGraphQL.

WPGraphQL 2.3.0 added some major performance improvements too so this is why we should consider 2.3.0 as the min version.

Monolog 3 requires PHP 8.1 and at the current time of writing PHP 8.1 is supported for security fixes only till 2026 - https://www.php.net/supported-versions

1. First part of developing the skeleton plugin is complete
2. This is still in a draft PR while we work on this
3. We are now onto task WPGraphQL Logging - POC Create Logging Setup #346 and creating a logger
