Plugin system?

I see many people cloning this project and building their own project from it, but that means that improvements from this project are hard to incorporate.

I wonder if a plugin system could be used, where the application is a plugin for the base project, and the base functionality can be upgraded without impacting the application.

Creating a Flux/Redux store could be a plugin, the backend, webpack configuration changes, ... It would be a little like using generators but without the bit rot.

Just wondering if that is possible while keeping a manageable project.
