Cannot access main window when merging with integrated tool

Using the integrated merge tool, the main sourcegit window becomes inaccessible. That can be annoying when needing context as how to merge.

Is this by design ?

It's because the merge dialog is a modal dialog.

Is it possible to change this behaviour or would it require a lot of effort ?

I am recalling the reason why I opened it as a modal dialog back then (there might have been some security-related considerations, which I have forgotten...).
