What is a Sitemap?

A sitemap is an XML file that lists all important pages on your website, helping search engines discover and crawl your content efficiently.

Why Sitemaps Matter

  1. Discovery: Helps search engines find pages that might not be linked elsewhere
  2. Prioritization: Indicates which pages are most important (priority)
  3. Freshness: Tells search engines how often content changes (changeFrequency)
  4. Metadata: Provides additional information about each URL
  5. Large Sites: Essential for sites with 500+ pages or poor internal linking

Sitemap Properties

url (required)

The full URL of the page.

When the page was last updated.

changeFrequency (optional)

How often the page content changes.

Valid values:

  • always - Changes every time it's accessed
  • hourly - Changes hourly
  • daily - Changes daily
  • weekly - Changes weekly
  • monthly - Changes monthly
  • yearly - Changes yearly
  • never - Archived content that never changes

Note: This is a hint to search engines, not a directive.

changeFrequency: 'weekly'

priority (optional)

Relative priority compared to other pages on your site.

  • Range: 0.0 to 1.0
  • Default: 0.5
  • 1.0 = Highest priority (usually homepage)
  • 0.0 = Lowest priority
priority: 0.8

Important: Priority is relative within your site, not across all websites.

Sitemap Best Practices

  1. Include Important Pages: Focus on pages you want indexed
  2. Exclude Low-Value Pages: Don't include thank-you pages, confirmation pages, etc.
  3. Keep It Updated: Regenerate when content changes (or use dynamic generation)
  4. Size Limits: Max 50,000 URLs or 50MB per sitemap (use sitemap index for larger sites)
  5. Canonical URLs: Only include canonical versions of pages (no duplicates)
  6. Valid URLs: Test all URLs return 200 status codes
  7. Submit to Search Engines: Submit via Google Search Console, Bing Webmaster Tools

What is robots.txt?

The robots.txt file tells search engine crawlers which pages or sections of your site they can or cannot access. It's located at the root of your domain.

Why Use robots.txt?

  1. Control Crawling: Prevent crawlers from accessing certain areas
  2. Save Crawl Budget: Focus crawlers on important content
  3. Prevent Indexing: Block admin pages, private areas, duplicate content

Important: robots.txt is a request, not enforcement. Malicious bots may ignore it. For true security, use authentication.
