Description

The examples on the custom listing page use name and href as fields, however for regular default/grid/table to pick them up is unclear if/how:

• name should not be used, better to use title (which is picked up by default/grid/table)
• href seems not picked up in any default/grid/table, none of the fields is linked, even when combined with field-links

Based on this my impression is that populating a listing with metdata items only works with custom list templates?

Default listings use some fields, but beyond that there are no constraints.

The page you link show you a custom listing listings with custom fields, so the metatada items use those fields.

The only field missing in the table is path which is the path to the document or whatever and that will be use for href link in the listing.
This being said, populating a listing using YAML is documented: https://quarto.org/docs/websites/website-listings.html#yaml-listing-content

Only the custom listing documentation because it defined a custom listing with an "href" field.
If you read the listings documentation, there are no "href" at all in the page.

I'm not sure why you are focusing so much on custom listing documentation instead of looking at the listing documentation here.
