Manage New Window Focus

I am looking for a way to change the window management settings in Cinnamon.
I basically want to keep working on something while windows open in the background - so I choose when to give them focus, not just take focus because I opened you.

This might be a feature request...

Use case:
Start of the day
Open 3 programs.
Current: Then each one decides to steal the focus - even if you are typing.
Wish: The current focused program is the only program with focus, the others open in the background.

Later in day:
Open an application that you know takes a while to load, go back to typing in a comment box like this.
Current: The application window steals focus, even if you are typing
Wish: The application with focus keeps the focus, especially if typing at the time.

Funnily enough, this post has the opposite problem

This post suggest OpenBox, but others on this forum point out that it is 10 years old, and built for different purposes

Does anyone have any ideas on how to better manage this?
The advice out on the web, like this talk about click and mouse over - which I have fiddled with - but I want even more control than that.
