Vite and the plugin are incompatible: unable to compile and run an app under Vite with the plugin installed and configured

I am moving from Webpack to Vite, or at least considering it.  I've been using the contracts plugin under Webpack successfully for years now.  But my app will not run at all under Vite with the plugin installed.  I get all sorts of compilation errors.

Have you been able to get Vite and your plugin to work together?
