Problems to reset database password

I had to reset the database password for one of my backdrop sites.
Altough I've set its settings.php for my new password according to the documantation

$database = 'mysql://database_user:new_password@localhost/database_name';
// $database_prefix = '';

it gives me an error on the website access:

backdrop cms SQLSTATE[HY000] [1045] Access denied

The site is no more working.

Why? How can I fix this?

Either the username or password used in the code is wrong, or the database permissions for that user don't allow access.

Well I've changed only the password. If I set the database password to the old one, everything works fine with exactly the same settings.

$database = 'mysql://database_user:old_password@localhost/database_name';

One problem I have is, that this password is known by others, which I don't want to let them know (earlier co-admin) ,,,
But if I define a new password, the access is denied.

The database user has full access.

When you tell us that the old password works, that tells us that the password has NOT been changed on the server. Each user account can only have one unique password.

How are you changing the password? The user and password for the database are set on the server by some other process. Either they are set in server config files, or via the UI in cpanel. The line of credentials in the settings file just passes those credentials to the server, it does not set a new password.

Well, I've reset the password to the old one in the database user configuration.
This can be done on the hosting providers database tool site, or locally for local hosted testing sites as example using HeidiSQL (Werkzeuge - Benutzerverwaltung = transl. Tools - User administration)

Then I've entered the new or old password in the settings.php.

I've tried:
Set the old password for MariaDB user, enter old password in settings.php -> access ok
Set the new password for MariaDB user, enter new password in settings.php -> access denied
Set the new password for MariaDB user, enter old password in settings.php -> access denied
Set the old password for MariaDB user, enter new password in settings.php -> access denied
Set the old password for MariaDB user, enter old password in settings.php -> access ok

This is probably a question for your hosting provider. Does the server need to be restarted after a password reset? In all your test cases, the new password is never working, but the old password is.

It appears the statement in the settings file is working as intended. Can we close this issue?

I hope you get this figured out soon, let us know how it goes...

CAVEAT -
Just to be safe, you should also check that the site is not using any other settings.php files. Sometimes there is more than one settings file that is included with a conditional statement. That sort of thing will override your initial settings.
