During the presentation, Daniel highlighted a concerning fact: the shipping industry releases 30 tons of CO2 into the atmosphere every second. He emphasized the urgent need for impactful solutions. Weather routing offers shipping companies the means to cut their emissions by at least 2%, while being accesible and affordable (as it is run on the cloud). Daniel highlighted the need for collaboration between research and industry.

Daniel's trip was a continuation of our collaboration with Dalhousie University. Dr. Robert Milson of the Mathematics Department welcomed Daniel, and together with Louis Bu, a graduate student in mathematics, they expanded our research on the optimization algorithms. Fruit of this collaboration, our algorithms are now able to run on more complex scenarios, thanks to the implementation of better cost functions and sailing restrictions.

The MSCS is a key annual event in Atlantic Canada, uniting leading researchers in mathematics, statistics, and computer science. This conference focuses on fostering collaboration and sharing the latest advancements in these fields. MSCS 2023 was hosted at the University of Prince Edward Island, where Louis presented his research, "A Comparative Study on Optimization Methods for Maritime Transport Routing". His work is the culmination of more than a year worth of research in applying mathematics to weather routing. Louis showcased the different algorithms we have been developing to optimize maritime routes: our A-star graph search, our CMA evolutionary search, and our self-named "Hybrid Search" - [you can read about it here!](https://weathernavigation.com/news/2023/hybrid-search)
