[Bug]: GNOME windows cannot open properly, all windows appear blank, the issue seems to be related to the 3D acceleration of Intel integrated graphics.

Cannot open any windows properly on GNOME, all windows open as blank.

How can we reproduce this?

I am also experiencing this issue. Notably, the same VM works correctly with a Linux Host OS (openSUSE Tumbleweed 20260331). This issue was present with Windows Host OS before and after installing guest additions.

How can we reproduce this?

• Fresh install of openSUSE Tumbleweed
• Run sudo zypper in 7zip cmake compsize decibels fastfetch fetchmsttfonts flatpak foliate free-ttf-fonts htop gimp git gnome-builder gnome-font-viewer gparted inkscape inxi kernel-default-devel kernel-devel kernel-longterm kernel-longterm-devel kernel-source kernel-source-longterm kicad libvirt lshw make meson mpv ncurses-devel octave osc opi papers patch pv regularhunter-monotional-fonts selinux-policy-targeted-gaming showtime stress-ng tmux vim vlc wireshark
• Reboot, login, then open any GUI application

I am unsure if installing those packages is necessary, but it is what I did.

@regularhunter , at first sight looks like 3D acceleration issue. Is there any change if you enable/disable 3D acceleration in VM settings? Also, please attach VBox.log.

The issue seems to be limited to GNOME, as tests have shown that Plasma and COSMIC do not have similar problems.

Disabling hardware acceleration resolved the issue :)

@regularhunter @galitsyn-oracle I found that if I run C:\Program Files\Oracle\VirtualBox\VirtualBoxVM.exe using the dedicated graphics card (NVIDIA GPU) instead of the Intel CPU integrated graphics, the GNOME window can open normally when 3D acceleration is enabled. This requires manually setting VirtualBoxVM.exe to use the dedicated GPU in Windows settings.

In other words, the 3D acceleration feature of the integrated graphics is broken, at least for laptop users with NVIDIA Optimus technology.
