Problem (one or two sentences)

roo is running then whole panel turns gray, i think it is actually still running and something is wrong with display,

Context (who is affected and when)

happens when running long context tasks in brrrr mode

Reproduction steps

happened multiple times today and occurred on both linux and windows machines, both running glm 4.7. updated to latest version, and occurred unpredictably mid session. cannot see to interact, if I open roo in terminal i can see last task and resume

the panel should be visible when running

panel turns gray and cannot ascertain state

tried moving from windows to linux machine, happened on both. tried moving from panel window to terminal, resumed but then eventually that also went gray. resolved with restart but recurred again after some hours. the vs code environments are different on windows vs linux with different extensions installed and only global modes installed on the linux terminal.

   • Completely gray with no content visible at all?
   • Partially gray with some elements still visible?

2. VS Code Developer Console: When this occurs, could you open the VS Code Developer Console (Help > Toggle Developer Tools > Console tab) and check for any error messages? Red error messages would be especially helpful.

3. Extension Output Logs: Could you check the Roo Code output channel (View > Output > select "Roo Code" from dropdown) for any errors or unusual messages when this happens?

4. Panel mode: Does this occur when:

   • Using the sidebar panel?
   • Using Roo Code in a separate editor tab?
   • Both?

5. "Brrrr mode" clarification: By "brrrr mode," do you mean having all auto-approval settings enabled? (Always allow read/write/execute/browser/MCP, etc.)

6. Task context: When the panel goes gray, is the AI still actively generating responses (can you see activity in the status bar or terminal), or does everything appear frozen?

7. Recovery attempts: When it happens:

   • Does clicking inside the panel respond?
   • Does switching tabs in VS Code and switching back help?
   • Does collapsing and expanding the sidebar help?

6. it appeared frozen but then i realized it was still working in at least one case after it was gray as modified files appeared in changes
7. no response within panel, tabs do not help, collapsing and expanding do not help, can open roo in editor and seems ok, restart resolves issue

Thanks for the additional clarification @DavinciDreams!

Based on your feedback, I've opened PR #10738 with an attempt at addressing this gray screen issue.

The implementation adds a heartbeat monitoring system that detects when the webview becomes unresponsive and offers automatic recovery. When the webview stops responding (3 missed heartbeats over 15 seconds), a notification will appear with an option to reload the panel.

This should help recover from the gray screen state without needing to restart the extension. Feedback welcome!

Thanks for sharing the console logs! I see a telemetry validation error where required properties (appName, appVersion, vscodeVersion, platform, editorName, language, mode) are undefined when capturing the "LLM Completion" event.

This is a separate issue from the gray screen. I will investigate the telemetry code to understand why these required properties are not being populated and work on a fix. Will open a PR to share progress.
