I expected version pins to ensure a compatible environment is built.

I haven't confirmed that this issue affects other repos yet, but it should be sufficient to run the branch test github action, or tox -e docs locally. If run locally, it may be necessary to delete the tox cache at ./.tox first to ensure fresh deps are downloaded
