update pg_dump version: 16.11 to 17.7

I'm running into the same issue that was brought up here:

Our Azure PostgreSQL Flexible Servers are on 17.7 and Azure Cloud Shell is using 16.11

This Azure post states that Azure PostgreSQL Flexible Servers support the following versions.

"PostgreSQL minor versions 18.1, 17.7, 16.11, 15.15, 14.20, and 13.23 are now supported by Azure Database for PostgreSQL – Flexible Server."

We need Azure Cloud Shell to support the same versions of PostgreSQL as Azure PostgreSQL Flexible Server supports.

This will allow us to use automations for backup/restore operations.

I understand that Cloud Shell is based on Azure Linux 3.0, however there isn't any reason that Azure Linux 3.0 cannot be updated to match Azure Database for PostgreSQL – Flexible Server supported versions.

Hello, yes when Cloud Shell updates the image, it pulls the latest psql version available in Azure Linux 3.0 in packages.microsoft.com: https://packages.microsoft.com/azurelinux/3.0/prod/base/x86_64/Packages/p/. Right now, that's v16.12 which Cloud Shell just updated to last week. To get newer versions of Postgres added to Azure Linux (and therefore Cloud Shell) when Azure PostgreSQL Flexible Server supports it, I suggest creating an issue at https://github.com/microsoft/azurelinux. I'll also reach out internally to see if this can be done.

My tested workaround for Azure Cloud Shell not including PostgreSQL client tool versions needed

Open Azure Cloud Shell where needed

use "arch" if needed to determine if shell is amd64 or ARM

Use wget to bring in a copy of the postgresql-client tools of the version you needed

Must be in base directory to use wget - " [ ~ ]$"

wget http://ftp.de.debian.org/debian/pool/main/p/postgresql-18/postgresql-client-18_18.3-1+b1_amd64.deb

Extract Files as needed

ar -xv postgresql-client-18_18.3-1+b1_amd64.deb
tar -xvf data.tar.xz

Move to folder containing postgresql-client tools

cd ~/usr/lib/postgresql/18/bin

Make any files needed executable

chmod +x pg_dump
chmod +x pg_restore
chmod +x psql

All commands must use the full path of the newly copied commands, or they will use the PATH of the tools included with Cloud Shell

~/usr/lib/postgresql/18/bin/pg_dump
